Road tax system - urgent review needed
The current road tax system uses CO2 emissions per km, regardless of how many km's the vehicle is actually driven, resulting in the following anomalies -
Low emission vehicles pay low road tax or no road tax, but they often emit significant CO2 by doing higher mileages.
High emission vehicles pay high road tax (currently up to £475 for cars), but they often emit lower CO2 by doing lower annual mileages.
Issues with this system -
The tax system is not linked to actual emissions.
The tax system effectively penalises low mileage drivers.
