Petition Action

UK MPs to take a 5% salary cut & abolish London MPs having a subsidised 2nd home

Petition Details

Westminster (UK) Parliament MPs receive a salary of £81,932.
1. We, the British taxpayer and electorate want our elected MPs to take a 5% pay cut (£4,096) to bring their basic salary to £77,836.
2. Also, we want taxpayer subsidy of second homes for London MPs to be abolished.

Additional Information

1. The UK is now in recession. Taxpayer relief of businesses and rising unemployment is at a record high and the national debt is rising.
We believe that UK MPs should follow the example set by other legislatures and Governments around the world and take a reasonable paycut to reflect the position of the economy and the electorate.

2. MPs representing London constituencies have no reasonable need for a taxpayer-subsidised second home. Savings for the public purse can be made by ceasing this.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government.

MPs representing London constituencies are already unable to claim for accommodation expenses.
