Are e-petitions admissible in Parliamentary Business
I would like the Government to outline more clearly what the requirements for a petition to be admissible in Parliamentary Business are, as well as whether they should be included in Parliamentary Business at all.
Simply saying '100,000 votes means it may get discussed' results in the ability for petitions to be dismissed at will.
Having no qualifying statements other than number of signatures also encourages an environment of 'he who shouts loudest for longest is correct'.
While I realise it is difficult to do this without limiting what would constitute a 'valid' petition, but currently there are no guidelines or examples of petitions which would stimulate a debate about a topic, rather than lobbying for a very specific change.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The issues raised a matter for the Backbench Business Committee of the House of Commons. More details for the Committee can be found on the www.parliament.uk website.
