Petition Action

Compulsory Life Experiences for Members of Parliament

Additional Information

The government must ensure that all current MPs experience new roles outside parliament for 6 weeks of each year in a cross section of sectors in the UK.

There will be some compulsory experiences – such as living on benefits for at least four weeks in one year - and MPs will also be able to choose what jobs to take on.

Work would be in unskilled, skilled and managerial roles and across farming, industry and services (including education and health).

Each MPs CV will be published on line .

Voters in their constituencies would be given the say in their MP taking on a particular job locally.

The intention is to give MPs a broader and fuller experience of the reality of employment/unemployment in the UK beyond the Westminster bubble – so enabling them to make decisions grounded on real experiences.
