Microchipping to be performed by a trained person
Responsible department: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Currently in UK legislation anyone can perform the insertion of a subcutaneous microchip into any pet.
Poorly inserted chips can cause terrible pain and suffering and sometimes irreparable spinal damage resulting in euthanasia.
Anyone can purchase a home kit online and people operating outside of the law can steal and falsely import dogs, passing them off as their own.
If you don't own a scanner you will not even know whether the chip is operating properly.
We need to stop the selling of home DIY kits to the general public and make it law that only Vets, properly trained individuals and rescues can purchase and implant the chips.
