Diagnosis for Anorexia Nervosa should not be based on a patients' BMI.
In the NHS,Anorexia Nervosa is normally diagnosed if the patients' BMI is 17.5 or below.
I propose to the government that less emphasis should be put on the BMI of the patient, and more on the mental wellbeing and physical health of the individual which is likely to have been greatly affected by starvation.
Diagnosis should be made based on the behaviours exhibited and the patients mental state NOT a number.Anorexia ruins your life and leaves you isolated and lonely,a number cannot change that. The emaciated anorexic patient is a tired outdated stereotype.
Getting a diagnosis saved my life and I know that it would do the same for the millions of British people who suffer with Anorexia.
Prevention of further deterioration is much more effective than cure.
