Rental History to Count Towards Mortgage Applications

Petition Details

Since starting renting 16 years ago there has been an in excess of £96,000 paid by myself and my partner/husband in rent. This should be evidence enough of an ability to repay a mortgage.

Additional Information

I wish for the government to change mortgage applications to take in a history of rental payments as evidence of an ability to repay a mortgage. In MANY cases mortgage repayments are LESS than rental payments. I would like to propose that a 10 year period of rental payment history to show that mortgage repayments are possible and affordable is taken into consideration.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise.

Landlords are able to report rental income to credit agencies, who can then take this into account as part of their rental scores. It is a decision for landlords and credit agencies whether or not to do this, The Government aren't responsible for operation of credit rating agencies or mortgage lenders.
