Require new developments to include wheelchair accessible homes

Petition Details

I would like the government to require new builds to incorporate a quota of wheelchair accessible homes. Local authorities can already set affordable housing obligations, which in 2018/19 led to 57,485 affordable homes being delivered. New provisions should increase the stock of accessible homes.

Additional Information

Only 7% of homes offer, minimal (wider doors) features for disabled people - showers and kitchens are still inaccessible. (Source EHRC, May 2018).

1.2 million UK citizens are reliant upon wheelchairs. The impact that a lack of disabled housing creates, is poor living conditions for disabled people, costs to the NHS and costs to local government, caring for these people. Disabled people should be treated equally they should have a quality of life and be able to be independent.
