Petition Action

Minimum 2 year prison sentence for attacks on emergency workers

Petition Details

Make all physical attacks on emergency workers subject to an automatic custodial sentence of a minimum of two full years.
Being under the influence of alcohol and or non-prescription drugs should not be an acceptable defence or mitigation.

Additional Information

Attacks on emergency workers are increasing in both numbers & severity. The excess consumption of drink and or misuse of drugs is sometimes accepted by the courts as a mitigating reason for these assaults, and the current penalties imposed by the courts seem increasingly ineffective and proving little deterrent to those committing these serious crimes.
Protecting those who are dedicated to saving lives and protecting our society has to be a basic requirement of our government.
