Petition Action

Abolish the use of the Body Mass Index (BMI) for health and medical assessments.

Petition Details

BMI is from 1830 & not fit for purpose. It uses height & weight and not body composition. With BMI lean fit athletes are classed as obese. It fails fit people for entry to the Armed Forces. More reliable means of assessing health & medical fitness should be used - percentage body fat/body density.

Additional Information

The Government should abolish the use of the Body Mass Index (BMI) for assessing health and medical fitness in formal assessments, such as the Armed Forces medical. It should be replaced with more reliable means of assessing health and medical fitness, such as percentage body fat (calliper test) or body density.
