List socio-economic background as a characteristic under the Equality Act 2010
1. Recognise socio-economic background as a factor which could impact success in employment recruitment.
2. List socio-economic background as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
3. Align with other 20 European countries who protect class discrimination.
The following characteristics are protected under the Act: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.
However, socio-economic background is not accounted for. This means employers could potentially discriminate against someone's accent, neighbourhood, school, upbringing, appearance, dress sense and tastes which are associated with their class.
