Petition Action

Force the banks pay us back for bailing them out in 2008 to help with Covid-19

Petition Details

We want the banks that we (and we had no choice in the matter) bailed out of the credit crunch of 2008,

Now the time has come for the banks to reciprocate and collectively pay us back the money we bailed them out with to help with the Covid-19 costs

Additional Information

In 2008, the uk government spent £500bn to bail out the banks after a financial crisis (of their own making)

Now we have to pay back the Covid-19 package and we believe the banks should be forced to pay back the £500bn to help pay for this,

We helped the banks, its now time for the banks to help us

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand that you want bans to contribute to the cost of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it's not clear how you want the Government to achieve this.

We have published the following petition, which you might like to sign:

A windfall tax on banks and hedge funds to save the economy: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/312107

We could accept a new petition calling for another levy or tax on the banking sector, but it would need to be clear exactly what action you want the Government to take.
