Ban estate agents from charging renewal fees on properties they don't manage
Make it illegal for estate agents to continue charging renewal fees after the tenancy term of 12 months on properties that they no longer manage and have no involvement in.
The agents charge fees without doing any work or adding any value. This adds significant costs to the landlord which is then passed on to the tenant.
London agents seem to be working as an oligopoly to squeeze money out of landlords and tenants and this practice does not seem widespread outside of London.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Landlords are responsible for the cost of setting up, renewing or ending a tenancy. Landlords can choose to contract an agent to manage the tenancy on their behalf. The amount charged for this service is a matter for negotiation between the agent and landlord, not the UK Government or Parliament. Agents can't charge renewal fees to tenants.
