Place a lower cap on the amount of expenses MPs can claim

Petition Details

MPs expenses should be capped at £725 per month (or £8,700 per annum) and subject to a modest inflationary rise each year.

Additional Information

MPs expenses cost the UK taxpayer £22.5m per annum ((2018/19). £100k was the highest amount claimed by a Birmingham MP. The current Chancellor of the Exchequer claimed the sixth lowest figure (£3,094). Theresa May was also in the lowest 10. In previous years claims were submitted for Armani jeans, a floating duck island, betting slips, a garden shed & moat cleaning. It is proposed to reduce the average claim of c£34,500, by 75%.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for setting MPs' pay or expenses. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government.
