Do NOT close gyms and leisure centres as part of lockdown measures
Do not close gyms and leisure centres as part of any future lockdown measures (as has been done in Liverpool). Keep gyms and leisure centres open regardless of ‘alert level’ to allow people to maintain and improve their physical and mental health by exercising.
Closing gyms and leisure centres denies people the opportunity to engage in exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, thus increasing the likelihood of higher rates of obesity, diabetes etc. in the population, which are known risk factors for severe illness/death with COVID-19. Furthermore, exercise including weight training is essential to the mental health of many, which has already been decimated by lockdown. Keeping gyms open is essential to protect physical & mental health of the public!
