Petition Action

Cut MP’s £125 Weekly Food Allowance.

Petition Details

Cut MP’s £125 weekly food allowance that is subsidised by tax payers money, and invest the money in free school meals for children in poverty.

Additional Information

This week, MP’s opted to vote down an extension to free school meals, many claiming there was not the funding available.
With 650 MP’s in Parliament, their weekly food allowance is costing the UK approximately £81,250 per week. That could be used to fund around 35,326* free schools meals for the 4.2million children living in poverty in the UK. With the average MP’s salary of £82k, surely the can afford their own meals?

*Average school meal is approximately £2.30 per meal.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for setting MPs' pay or expenses. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government.

You can find out more about IPSA here: www.theipsa.org.uk/about-us/

MPs may claim for the cost of purchasing food and non-alcoholic drinks where they have stayed overnight outside the London Area and their constituency. This is limited to £25 for each night they have stayed, but the claims can be for purchases made during the day.
