affordable housing
The government should invest in local authorities (also allow them to use existing cash reserves) to start schemes with local building companies to build housing, targeted at their local needs (or build them directly)
These homes should be sold at cost +10%, the proceeds should be re invested into more of the same.
Priority for these homes should be given to people on the social housing waiting lists, first time buyers or linked into a downsizing scheme to encourage owners of larger homes to downsize.
This would;
• Increase the housing stock of the types required in each area
• Reduce the need for social housing by getting people off the lists
• Stop the house price spiral by reducing the demand on existing stocks
• Increase employment in the local areas
• Get people off benefit by building the homes directly employing & training local people to do the building
• Provide additional larger homes for local authorities
