Impose a 20% paycut on those in positions of power

Petition Details

The Covid Crisis has had a significantly different affect on many people.
All MPs, Civil Servants, Academics, Police Officers, NHS staff, Local Authority employess, Charity employees, and any other related/similar staff earning over £60k should have a 20% paycut, to a minimum of £50k

Additional Information

The Covid Crisis has had a significantly different affect on many people. Those that are in high paying jobs in the public sector and related sectors have seen very little difference on thier financial wellbeing, whilst many in the private sector and particulalry the self employed have seen a dramatic decline in their living standards. Those that are proposing and implementing these measures should also face the consequences of their decisions so as we are all in this together.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call for a specific action that the Government or House of Commons is responsible for.

Neither the Government nor House of Commons is responsible for the salaries of many of the people you have referred to in your petition.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) is responsible for deciding on MPs' expenses and pay. IPSA is independent of both Parliament and Government. The salary of academics is a matter for individual educational institutions. The salary of local authority staff is a matter for individual local authorities. The salary of charity workers is a matter for individual charities.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to seek to reduce the salaries of public sector workers for which it is directly responsible.
