Write-off repayment of Universal Credit advance loans taken out during December
Universal Credit is based on a monthly Assessment Period, which means that for people who lose their jobs when furlough ends in December, they will not receive their first Universal Credit payment until after Christmas. Financial help must be provided to prevent hardship and destitution.
Given that the upfront Universal Credit advance loans must be repaid, they lead to debt and future deductions from Universal Credit awards, leaving people with less money to live on. Government needs to act to assist people who lose their jobs when furlough ends. Government needs to act to write-off repayment of the the upfront Universal Credit advance loans taken out during December, and so prevent hardship and destitution at Christmas.
