Devolve Media to Welsh Parliament Wales has “democratic deficit” this must end!

Petition Details

Media coverage of political actors plays an important role in shaping peoples’ political opinions and slanted message flows in the media can affect political outcomes.
The mainly London media set up with its one-sided messaging or confusing messaging has a negative effect here in Wales.

Additional Information

“The weakness of the media in Wales has led to an “unacceptable and unsustainable democratic deficit” whereby people do not possess basic information about the Welsh Parliament and Government” …“And does he [The First Minister] agree it’s not the fault of Welsh citizens, but rather that they’re being let down by the current media landscape, and if so, is he willing to work cross-party to explore ways to properly inform the public ahead of next year’s election?” Delyth Jewell MS

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned with how various media outlets cover the news, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to devolve responsibility over broadcasting and regulation of the media to the Welsh Government, but it would still be up to individual media outlets, not the Government, how they cover the news.
