Petition Action

Call for general public to debate removing Parliamentary Privilege for MPs/Lords

Petition Details

Parliamentary Privilege is legal immunity for UK House of Commons/Lords members. A handful of politicians are flouting public interests/opinions e.g. a petition “Reclose schools & colleges due to increase in COVID-19 cases” had 414,602 signatures & a few blocked it from being debated by all 650 MPs

Additional Information

Politicians make decisions to promote their own interests & are not held to account. If they were they would take others circumstances into consideration. People/students should be given a voice

Since March, lockdowns/wearing masks/keeping distance has not stopped deaths/infections/ hospital admissions & ruined lives this can’t happen until there is a safe vaccine. See: https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

The title of your petition refers to parliamentary privilege, but the main text of your petition appears to relate to how petitions are considered by the Petitions Committee.

Under the Standing Orders of the House of Commons the Petitions Committee has been appointed to consider e-petitions submitted through the House of Commons and Government e-petitions site.

As part of this work the Committee considers whether to hold debates on any petitions that have received over 100,000 signatures. Whether to hold a debate is a matter for the Committee.

The Petitions Committee agreed not to debate e-petition 300403 because by the time Westminster Hall, where petitions debates take place, had been reopened, the Government had already acted on the request made.

A debate on several petitions, including e-petition 550846, is taking place this afternoon. You can watch the debate on Parliament TV here from 6pm: www.youtube.com/UKParliament

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
