Petition for UK Government to Re-Ratify United Nations International Labour Organisation Convention 1948/88 Denounced in 1971

Additional Information

University careers services only support graduates for three years.

In 1971, only approximately eight percent of the student population went up to a university to read for a degree. Ninety-two percent did not go.

The United Kingdom Government has reneged on the 1971 assurance given in writing to the United Nations International Labour Organisation, that the spirit of Employment Service Convention 1948/88, which was confirmed on 9 July 1948, would continue to be fully upheld following the Government’s denouncement of the Convention’s requirement to maintain a free public employment service and which included specialist employment services.

The stated reason for the denunciation in 1971 was to be able to charge employers fees.

Only three countries have denounced the International Labour Organisation requirement to provide a free public employment service: Bulgaria, on 13 March 1961; United Kingdom, on 6 August 1971; and Italy, on 9 August 1971.
