Petition Action

No detriment policy for all university students during the coronavirus pandemic

Petition Details

Students have had minimal support and resources during the pandemic over the last 10 months, yet are expected to turn in assignments the same as any other year. Both undergraduates and postgraduates are struggling academically as well as mentally and financially. We need a no detriment policy.

Additional Information

Universities have not listened to student unions or student pleas despite requests en mass. Even though we pay tuition, the only input and guidelines they will respond to in a timely manner are those set by the government. Many of us have spent our entire savings to go to university only to have a terrible experience this year and to top it all off, are expected to produce exceptional work under extreme stress. We need a rule set in place that the university cannot refuse or ignore.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Universities are autonomous institutions so they way they deliver courses and assess students is a matter for individual universities, not the Government or House of Commons.

The Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector in England, published guidance for providers about quality and standards during coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in March, which notes that ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies introduced by some providers are likely to be appropriate, but such policies are a matter for individual providers, and must meet conditions for awarding bodies: www.officeforstudents.org.uk/media/f351a739-6cd6-4310-8f98-a6aa603f17f4/quality-and-standards-guidance-during-coronavirus.pdf
