Student accommodation providers must issue partial refunds in lockdown
Students that are prevented, by law, from returning to university, should not be forced to pay for food and accommodation that they are legally not allowed to use. Partial refunds should be offered for all periods of government enforced closures.
University students are being mandated, by law, to stay at home and not return to university during the current lockdown, and were forced to return home 3 weeks early in December. Yet student accommodation providers are demanding that full accommodation costs - including for food in fully catered halls of residence - be paid for throughout lockdowns and other closures. This is morally unacceptable, especially as parents also have to pay for food whilst the student is forced to remain at home.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Suspending payments for rent or ending a tenancy early is a matter for individual landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.
