Petition Action

Cancel IGCSE Exams

Petition Details

We want to see a statement by Gavin Williamson (The current Secretary of State for Education) stating whether IGCSE will happen this summer and if they do, why are Year 11 students taking IGCSE's being treated differently to other students this year taking GCSE's and also last years students.

Additional Information

Pupils must be treated fairly and inline with the government's position to cancel Exams, having pupil's evaluated the same way as the cancelled GCSE's. The government is working with Ofqual (who controls GCSE's but not IGCSE's). IGCSE boards have released statements stating their plans to continue with exams. This is causing unwanted ambiguity for students in a turbulent time. If this continues this will cause a grade disparity between GCSE's teacher assessed results and the IGCSE exam results.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about courses and assessments that are delivered by independent educational institutions, as opposed to state schools, are a matter for individual exam boards and educational institutions, not the Government or House of Commons.

We could accept a petition calling for the Government to prohibit any exams from taking place during the Covid-19 outbreak, if that is something you want to happen.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
