Introduce measures to tackle false information on social media

Petition Details

The Government should make publishing or reposting false information on social media a criminal offence, and require social media companies to remove false content when this is brought to their attention. Social media services failing to remove false content would also be liable to fines.

Additional Information

We have seen the increased use of social media to disseminate false information to undermine society. We need to establish criminal and judicial mechanisms to prevent the posting and to prevent the continued posting and recycling of lies on social media platforms, while protecting the ability of people to advocate alternate views and beliefs.
