Petition Action

That impeachment is reinstated as a means of lawful remedy.

Petition Details

Impeachment is a democratic demand that seeks to redress the public for wrongs committed in office by parliamentary members. The efforts to impeach Tony Blair PM and Boris Johnson PM show that this is a remedy that the public demands. We undersigned demand the right to petition for impeachment.

Additional Information

Recent history shows that impeachment has been sought as a remedy against law breaking by members of Parliament, see:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions?q=Impeach+&state=all
and
https://www.parliament.uk/site-information/foi/foi-and-eir/commons-foi-disclosures/other-house-matters/impeachment-2015/
The process is considered obsolete but Parliament has not properly debated whether it is obsolete or a democratic right at times of crisis.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

Impeachment still technically exists as a Parliamentary privilege. However, it is now considered obsolete in light of constitutional changes and developments in how Parliament scrutinises Ministers. See:
commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7612/

We think you want Parliament to consider whether it can still use impeachment as a means to censure Ministers, but it's not clear what change you want to come about as a result of this debate.

In any case, impeachment of a Minister would be a matter for Parliament, and not an action that could be started by public petition. We can't accept petitions about honours or appointments, which includes calling for Ministers or MPs to be sacked, resign, or to be subject to a recall vote or a vote of no confidence.
