Petition Action

Award a George Cross to the NHS for its Covid work (like Malta GC)

Petition Details

Award a George Cross to the NHS as a body in recognition of the indefatigable efforts of its staff during this COVID crisis.

Additional Information

The island of Malta was awarded the GC in 1942 for its bravery and commitment during the great siege, the island was constantly bombed but the loyal people of Malta continued to remain loyal and support the allied forces operating from the island. In 2020 and 2021 the Paramedics, A&E, ITU and other frontline NHS staff risk their health and sanity battling with a new existential threat. Short of personnel and supplies and exhausted they stay resolutely at their posts in a similar way to Malta

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We cannot accept petitions that call for specific awards or honours, such as the George Cross, to be given to individuals or organisations, because we can only accept petitions about matters for which the Government or Parliament are responsible.

There is an independent process for considering nominations for awards and honours, including the George Cross, and advising the Queen on granting these, so it is not something the Government or Parliament can do.
