Petition Action

Classify gyms and sport as "essential" to prevent their closure during lockdowns

Petition Details

Covid-19 pandemic has seen the closure of shops and business that have been deemed unessential by the government.
Gyms are set to lose £400million a month during lockdowns. What we would like, is for gyms and leisure industry to be classified as an essential service for mental and physical health.

Additional Information

Data from .gov.uk, the ONS and NHS has outlined clearly three factors which increase risk of contracting Covid or requiring hospital. Of those, poor metabolic health which includes obesity, increases risk of hospitalisation and long Covid. Gyms and leisure are the primary preventative industry towards reducing obesity, improving metabolic health and educating the public towards better health for the future which can reduce the burden on the NHS long-term.
