Petition Action

Prevent automated recorded voice phone calls unless from a subscribed service.

Petition Details

Make it illegal for anyone, company or individual, to arrange for people to contacted by phone where an automated message is played, which tries to prompt an action . (Not to include signed up for, subscription services, such as medical appointment reminders and information from an employer)

Additional Information

Vulnerable people are being targeted in this way by scammers. Messages such as 'Your internet will be cut off in 1 hour, Press 1 to order a new router' (Customer then starts to be charged an extortionate amount for the call)and, 'Your National Insurance number is being used fraudulently' etc are regularly received in most households.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

It is up to individual businesses, not the Government, whether to use recorded phone call services, or have people make calls on their behalf.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to ban unsolicited phone calls of any kind, if that's something you would like to happen.
