Ban unofficial websites charging for government services
We call on the government to introduce legislation to make it illegal to run a website charging extra fees to provide a service available from government for free or for a lower charge.
For example, many websites offer:
- a 'driving test booking service', but charge up to £30 on top of the actual cost
- the NHS EHIC card at a cost
- passport 'services' that offer no value
Attempts through trading standards, the OFT and Advertising Standards Authority to stop these sites in their misleading practices has been unfruitful. Therefore, we call on the government to introduce an outright ban on these 'services'.
