Petition Action

Ban the use of Per - and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in UK food packaging.

Petition Details

There is strong evidence that Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are found in UK food packaging. There are extensive studies that show these "forever chemicals" are an immanent threat to public health. They should be banned from manufacturing, like the global ban on the use of PFOA

Additional Information

The UK Government must commit to joining this phase-out of PFAS.
A growing body of science has found that there are potential adverse health impacts associated with PFAS exposure, including liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression and cancer.

Non-stick pans, furniture, cosmetics, household cleaners, clothing, and packaged food containers can all contain PFCs, many of which break down into PFOA in the environment or in the human body.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about PFAs, but we're not sure if you want the Government to ban their use in food packaging, or all manufacturing.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
