Legislate rent relief for commercial tenants affected by Covid - 19

Petition Details

Although the Government has issued a code of practice for commercial landlords and tenants many landlords are refusing any rent relief for their tenants many of whom have been closed for long periods of time.

Additional Information

Unless the government intervenes and legislates so that landlords are compelled to give relief to tenants in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors these companies will be saddled with debt which will take years to pay back. It is morally unfair that tenants have this burden whilst landlords are suffering no losses whatsoever.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments for rent is a matter for individual landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

You could start a new petition calling on the Government to set up a fund to reimburse commercial tenants that are contractually obliged to continue paying rent but are unable to make use of the premises they rent as a result of coronavirus.
