Petition Action

Require local authorities to compost all food waste

Petition Details

Make it mandatory that all food waste and compostable material is collected and composted, rather than go to landfill or incineration.

Additional Information

Food waste in landfill release methane, a more potent greenhouse gas. Production of compost, then used in farming has a number of benefits.

Carbon is sequestered into the soil so carbon in the atmosphere is reduced.
Soil structure is improved so desertification is reduced.
Soil has a greater ability to absorb water, so less flooding, water run off, pollution of waterways.
Soil has more nutrients, microbes can grow, these increase the amount of carbon removed from the atmosphere.
