Regulate the naming of cosmetic and beauty products based on their ingredients
The names of cosmetic and beauty products such as fragrances should be regulated so that companies cannot name their product after an ingredient that is negligible in the fragrance.
For example, introducing a minimum amount of ingredient that must be present in order to name the fragrance after that ingredient.
The cosmetic industry is currently able to name their products after raw materials that are present in their product, even if the amount present is negligible. For example, the ingredient ‘oud’ is particularly expensive and rare with 12ml costing up to £2,000. However, some companies seek to use the reputation of oud to their advantage by naming their product after it despite having less than 0.006% oud present.
This practice of naming a fragrance after an ingredient that is barely present is deceptive to the consumer by leading them to believe that they are paying for a product when in reality they aren’t.
