Petition Action

Change the Status of Pets in Law. They should be Treated as Sentient Beings.

Petition Details

At Present (for example) if an Animal is Negligently Treated by a Vet the only option in most Cases is to Take the Case to Court. In that Arena Pets are Treated in the same way as Damage to a Car. The Law currently does not take into Account the Support, Love and Health Benefits that Animals Give.

Additional Information

Please change the Common Laws to accept that Pets of all Types have Deep Seated and Emotional Ties to their Owners which is more than Reciprocated. Furthermore, at present Stealing or Kidnapping a Pet (Primarily Dogs) does not offer any sort of Justifiable Sentence which would give Justice to a Pet Owner. Animals feel Pain, Stress and this is also felt by their Owners - Pets are part of the Family not an Inanimate Possession.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about protections of animals, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

The Animal Welfare Act 2006 makes owners and keepers responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals are met. Anyone who is cruel to an animal, or does not provide for its welfare needs, may be banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison. It is up to the police, Crown Prosecution Service and courts to investigate alleged offences and prosecute these.

We have published the following petitions, which you might like to sign:

Implement an Animal Bill of Rights protecting all species of animals: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/561124

Create a public register of people banned from keeping animals in the UK: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/573147

Increase sentences for all animal cruelty offences: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/565404

If you would like the Government to make a specific change to the law different to the above petition you could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
