Petition Action

Allow divorcees the right to stop an ex partner continuing to use their surname

Petition Details

Many people are sadly subjected to marriages that are abusive in nature. The law allows an ex partner to retain a married surname even if it is kept simply as a way of continuing their controlling emotional behaviour. Ex partners need to have a pathway to stop this to help free themselves.

Additional Information

Help people to fully escape from abusive relationships by stopping at ex partner from using their favourite tool of control.
Allowing someone to keep the married surname of someone they have abused is allowing the abuse to continue.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

In the UK it is up to individuals to decide what name they use, including whether to change this legally. The Government cannot require that individuals change their name after a relationship breaks down.
