Review the laws on abdication and succession for the monarchy

Petition Details

The government will review the current constitutional arrangements for the monarch's succession, with a view to reform. Consideration should be given to mechanisms for abdication following votes of no-confidence in unsuitable monarchs, and to systems of tanistry and election from roydammna.

Additional Information

The political and cultural views of the Prince of Wales, Duke of Edinburgh, and Duke of York on race and sexism are a matter of public record. These are at odds with the accepted norms of behavior in the UK and undermine the legitimacy of the monarchy.

There is historical precedent in the United Kingdom and the wider British Isles for the abdication or forcible removal of a monarch who is unsuitable for the office. Appropriate 21st century mechanisms for this must be developed.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about existing rules regarding the line of succession, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. Your petition refers to votes of no confidence and systems of tanistry and election from roydammna, but it's not clear what alternatives you want a review to consider, or what the purpose of the review you are requesting would be.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
