Petition Action

Enable community food collectors to rescue more food by changing use-by rules.

Petition Details

Current Environmental Health Regulation prevents use-by dates to be exceeded.
4 years of feeding thousands of the hungry, through an oversight, supermarket waste food, being consumed a day after without adverse effect, preventing tons of quality food needlessly incinerated, prompts a rule change.

Additional Information

During these post-Covid times, many are becoming impoverished, relying on food banks where food choice is limited, our charity has been able to supplement with chilled foods to help improve their quality of life, providing high protein, nutritious food that would have likely been incinerated, constrained by present inflexible legislation.
Our daily collection and deliveries, have given much joy, drastically reducing waste too. A 24 hour window after sell-by will liberate many more tons of food.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We're not sure whether you want this to cover Use-By or Sell-By dates, as both are mentioned. We're also not sure what circumstances you'd like to be included, such as wanting this food to be able to be given away, or used to prepare meals to be given away.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
