Petition Action

Make it part of the curriculum to teach and discuss consent and accountability.

Petition Details

We need to make sure we have open and honest discussions with future generations about why so many people, particularly women and girls, don't feel safe in or outside of their homes and what we can do to stop this.

Additional Information

Discussing how gender, consent and accountability is perceived by students will help them challenge harmful ideas such as those often presented by the media or passed on from traditional views and misinformation. Equally, having open discussions may also help people feel more comfortable reporting any incidents or violent crimes perpetrated against them.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Government's new Relationships and Sex Education curriculum, which is mandatory in all state schools from this year, requires that students are now taught about key aspects of the law relating to sex, which include the age of consent, what consent is and is not, the definitions and recognition of rape, sexual assault and harassment, and that sexual violence and sexual harassment are not acceptable: www.gov.uk/government/publications/relationships-education-relationships-and-sex-education-rse-and-health-education/relationships-and-sex-education-rse-secondary
