Change the way Ethnicity is recorded. African NOT Black. Black is not a race
Ethnicity/background should not be compared or limited to a color. This is dehumanizing and unacceptable, many do not agree with the acceptable ethnic codes. The Government should carry out a referendum and determine how many people prefer to be identified with their country or continent of origin
The ethnicity codes of the ONS do not cater for many individuals who do not identify as "Black" or "White" but identify with their nationality or continent. The use of color has not in any way improved racial disparities or reduced significantly systematic racism in the United Kingdom. Black is not a race; it is a color and it is the 2nd of the so-called race groups which is not named after a country or a continent like other ethnic groups in the ONS codes
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The Office for National Statistics is independent of the Government, so decisions about how it records ethnicity is a matter for the ONS.
We could accept a petition calling for changes to the Government's guidance on writing about ethnicity and the list ethnic groups it recommends are used when asking for someone's ethnicity. You can read the current guidance and list here: www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/style-guide
