Petition Action

Legislate carriers to build a mechanism to report and stop fraudulent callers.

Petition Details

Implement a system where after a Scam call the impacted party can dial 7226 after the call to report the call (Similar to existing1471) to the carrier and if the suspect fraud line passes a 'score' (20 calls from the same number to 20 different destinations) then the calling line gets suspended .

Additional Information

The called party has the ability to report Scam calls immediately and a criteria has to be met prior to temporary suspension of the calling line. Currently Scam Callers ('Your Router is having problems', 'I am from Sky Broadband', etc) is getting out of control. 7226 has been chosen as it spells SCAM on the telephone keyboard. This could be used on landlines the moment the called party hangs up (Same as 1471). In the case of mobiles then a text SMS with the number could be sent to 7226.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise.

This is a matter for the communications services regulator Ofcom, and individual carriers.
