Petition Action

Childcare costs & child support to remain at full entitlement, UC calculations.

Petition Details

For childcare costs and child support to remain at the full entitlement amount, UK citizens using UC, are in low income jobs. These deductions are pushing citizens into poverty and debt. This would also support mothers returning to work instead of making the decision if they can afford to go back.

Additional Information

Women during the pandemic are more likely to have lost jobs, quit since the first lockdown or furloughed. The Fawcett Society found 35% of working mothers have lost work & hours due to childcare support. 78% of employees in health & social work & 71% education are women. Women have to make the decision if they can afford to return to work with childcare costs vs if they want to return. Returning to work, allows for mother/fathers to also increase their mental health by connecting with others.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about the payment of childcare costs for people who are claiming Universal Credit, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

If you are getting Universal Credit, you can claim back up to 85% of the costs of childcare that has taken place and you have already paid for: www.gov.uk/government/publications/universal-credit-and-childcare/universal-credit-childcare-guide

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. For example, we could accept a petition calling on the Government to enable Universal Credit claimants to claim 100% of the childcare costs they have.
