Petition Action

Stop the Premier League’s ‘big 6’ joining a European Super League.

Petition Details

Debate what can be done to prevent Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea joining a breakaway European Super League, bearing in mind the potential damage that this could do in undermining our existing domestic competitions.

Additional Information

I believe this is damaging to the sport of football in England. It represents a slap in the face to the communities the clubs represent, and, if allowed to go ahead, will be one step towards their complete departure from domestic competitions. Not only that, it will have an immediate undermining effect on existing competitions in England. The proposed super league damages the culture, tradition, economics and society of football at home and steps which can be taken to prevent it must be debated.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you're concerned about English clubs joining the proposed European Super League, however since you started your petition the Government has clearly expressed its opposition to the plans and the six participating English clubs have all withdrawn, as you may know.

On Monday 19 April the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP said that he was appalled by the announcement that a handful of clubs are proposing to form their own breakaway European league, ands said the Government would not hesitate to protect one of our greatest national institutions: football. The Culture Secretary said that the Government would back the football authorities to stop this move, and if the football authorities couldn’t act, the Government would. The Culture Secretary said the Government would "put everything on the table to prevent this from happening."

Further, on 19 April the Government announced a 'Fan-led review of football governance', which will explore ways of improving the governance, ownership and financial sustainability of clubs in English football, building on the strengths of the football pyramid.
