Petition Action

Make it illegal to broadcast European Super League matches in the UK

Petition Details

I would like the Government to legislate to ban commercial broadcasters, such as BSkyB, Virgin Media and BT Sport, from showing matches from the newly created European Super League on their channels and online when accessed from the UK.

Additional Information

The creation of the European Super League shows a total lack of understanding of the history of both British & European football. For these 12 founding clubs to believe they are superior and can create their own tournament, which they can never be relegated from, breaks the whole sporting pyramid and removes fairness and compettion from the game.

As a lifelong Liverpool fan I am DISGUSTED by the actions of my club, all for the unrestrained greed for shareholder profit for the billionaire owners

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The right to broadcast football matches are a contractual matter between clubs, organising bodies and broadcasters, not the UK Government or Parliament.

In any case, since you started your petition the Government has clearly expressed its opposition to the plans and the six participating English clubs have all withdrawn, as you may know.

On Monday 19 April the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP said that he was appalled by the announcement that a handful of clubs are proposing to form their own breakaway European league, ands said the Government would not hesitate to protect one of our greatest national institutions: football. The Culture Secretary said that the Government would back the football authorities to stop this move, and if the football authorities couldn’t act, the Government would. The Culture Secretary said the Government would "put everything on the table to prevent this from happening."

Further, on 19 April the Government announced a 'Fan-led review of football governance', which will explore ways of improving the governance, ownership and financial sustainability of clubs in English football, building on the strengths of the football pyramid. You can read more about this review here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/fan-led-review-of-football-governance
