Petition Action

Enforce a ban on “the top 6” football teams from joining the ESL

Petition Details

I would like the government to enforce a ban or high fine on clubs willing to leave domestic competitions to join this new league. It’s totally un acceptable and destroys the basic football morals which this country helped find. It is your responsibility to not ruin the game as well as lively hoods

Additional Information

Keeping these teams as they are and evenly distributing money between high league teams and low league teams. I’d also praise the total ban of a breakaway league and any type of break away league in the future. I also believe heavy fines should be placed on the top 6 clubs for even coming up with the idea. Furthermore legislation should be in place to protect football clubs and fans from falling victims of such breakaways.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

On Monday 19 April the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP said that he was appalled by the announcement that a handful of clubs are proposing to form their own breakaway European league, ands said the Government would not hesitate to protect one of our greatest national institutions: football. The Culture Secretary said that the Government would back the football authorities to stop this move, and if the football authorities couldn’t act, the Government would. The Culture Secretary said the Government would "put everything on the table to prevent this from happening."

Since you started your petition it has also been announced that all six Premier League teams that were initially involved in the European Super League have withdrawn. You can read a report of this news here: www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56823501

Further, on 19 April the Government announced a 'Fan-led review of football governance', which will explore ways of improving the governance, ownership and financial sustainability of clubs in English football, building on the strengths of the football pyramid.
