Petition Action

Bring more awareness to Domestic violence in young adults in the UK.

Petition Details

I want more action on this issue because many young adults who share an intimate relationship undergo many different types of abuse and violence. This is not taught or brought up to young people from the start of their secondary education, hence why we believe the rate of abuse is high.

Additional Information

According to the crime survey for England and Wales last year March 2020, (an estimated 5.5% of adults aged 16 to 74 years) 2.3 million people last year went through domestic abuse. This is not spoken about enough and government are not doing their part to help these young adults come out of these abusive relationships. I believe it would be helpful for young girls to learn of the signs of an abusive relationship from the start so they are better protected.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand you are concerned about children being educated about abuse and neglect, however statutory guidance for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) states that schools are required to support pupils to recognise "when relationships (including family relationships) are unhealthy or abusive (including the unacceptability of neglect, emotional, sexual and physical abuse and violence, including honour-based violence and forced marriage) and strategies to manage this or access support for oneself or others at risk".

The guidance further states that "Schools should also be mindful that for pupils who are or have experienced unhealthy or unsafe relationships at home or socially, the school may have a particularly important role in being a place of consistency and safety where they can easily speak to trusted adults, report problems and find support."

You can read the full guidance here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/908013/Relationships_Education__Relationships_and_Sex_Education__RSE__and_Health_Education.pdf

It is therefore not clear what it is about the curriculum that you would like to be changed. If there are specific changes you would like to be made to the curriculum, you could start a petition about that.
