Dispense with the proposed Voter ID requirements

Petition Details

Instead of creating more barriers to voting, ministers should focus on making it easier for everyone to vote, and ensuring we can all have an equal say in our democratic process.

These proposals are nothing more than an attack on the rights of some of the most marginalised people in society.

Additional Information

At the moment, people only have to walk into a polling station and give their name and address to vote. 3.5 million British citizens do not have a photo ID. This is a cynical and ugly attempt to rig the system to disempower the poorest and most marginalised groups.

Voting is safe and secure in the UK, which means the policy is just an unnecessary barrier to democratic participation. Ministers need to listen to these concerns and drop these costly plans.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

You may wish to sign this petition calling for the same action: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/576024

If you want the Government to introduce measures to make it easier for everyone to vote, we could accept a petition requesting this, but you'd need to be clear what measures you want to be introduced.
