Petition Action

make energy prices fairer and remove the need to keep changing supplier

Petition Details

I want the government to take back control of the way energy companies charge for gas and electricity because at present suppliers are in competition with each other, a system that the government introduce but the system has become broken over time and is no longer fit for purpose.

Additional Information

stop companies enticing people by using an introductory rate and then changing customers to a more expensive standard rate tariff after the introductory rate ends

stop companies locking the new company out of meter readings resulting in estimated and more expensive bills

stop companies paying price comparison sites to feed customers there way.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions must call for a specific action that the UK Government or House of Commons is responsible for.

Individual energy providers are responsible for deciding on energy charges, subject to rules set by Ofgem, including price caps: www.ofgem.gov.uk/energy-price-caps/consumers

As a result it is not possible for the Government or House of Commons to take the action you have requested.

If what you want is the for the Government to nationalise the energy sector, we could accept a petition requesting that.
