Increase penalties for illegal evictions
Current fines and sentences for landlords who carry out illegal evictions are often at such a low level that they do not deter them from committing this offence: in one recent case a landlord was fined just a few hundred pounds.
The law should be changed to set minimum sentences that are an effective deterrent.
The paltry fines which can be levied against landlords who illegally evict their tenants show this offence is not taken seriously. The law should be changed to introduce a minimum fine - say, the equivalent of six months rent - which will provide an adequate deterrent and properly express society's disapproval of this offence, and landlords should also be faced with a real prospect of imprisonment if they offend.
